The Médiathèque Musicale Mahler grew out of the generosity and strong will of two musicologists, Maurice Fleuret and Henry-Louis de La Grange, who decided to provide public access to their personal collections.
The Médiathèque Musicale Mahler is an association under the 1901 French law and is accredited by the Fondation de France.
It is presided by Pierre Bergé.

John Cage was a prolific composer with endless imagination, who was fascinated by all art forms, from painting to literature. Following the advice of composer Henry Cowell, he turned to music - which he rethought in a totally new manner influenced by oriental philosophy and chance.
Pierre Bergé supported the work of this unique artist, particularly by organizing his first concert in France at the Edouard VII Theater in Paris.
First Parisian concert at the Edouard VII theater
Born in Baltimore in 1937, Philip Glass discovered music at a young age in his father's radio repair shop. At the age of six, he started playing the violin, and at 8 the flute, an instrument which allowed him to dive headfirst into music. At the University of Chicago, where he studied mathematics and philosophy, he devoted all of his free time to the piano. He left for New York to study at Julliard's with the intention of becoming a composer. In his mid-twenties, he visited Paris to work for a film direector who needed Ravi Shankar's music to be transcribed. The experience pushed him to apply oriental techniques to his own works.
By 1974, he had already composed a number of musical works including “Music in 12 parts”. But it was only after meeting Robert Wilson in 1976 that he reached the heights of his talent by composing the music for “Einstein on the Beach,” a musical monument of the 20th Century.
The Salzburg Festival
Hector Berlioz's great opera in five acts, completed in 1858, was produced in 2000 at the Salzburg Festival with the support of Pierre Bergé and in tribute to Gérard Mortier.
Sylvain Cambreling conducted the Paris Orchestra and Herbert Wernicke directed. Berlioz was inspired to write this opera by Virgil's Aeneid which he had read as a child.

This Winter's Journey is a project over 10 years in the making. When I ended the Lundis Musicaux (Musical Mondays) at the Athénée Theater, a series of encounters ensued, Robert first, then Jessye. Those who embarked on this adventure are friends, comrades: Jessye Norman, Robert Wilson, Yves Saint Laurent. They are a part of my life. I want to express my gratitude and admiration to them.
