We are very happy that this exhibition - the first outside of France
since the foundation was created - is being held in A Coruna, in Spain,
the country of Goya and of Picasso, two painters who repeatedly
influenced Yves Saint Laurent's work. The show's name itself reflects
the complicity Saint Laurent has always felt with artits.
This
exhibition is organized by the Foundation Caixa Galicia, in association
with the Foundation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent.
47 models haute couture
will have a dialogue with 33 works of art which influenced Yves Saint
Laurent, as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Francisco de
Goya, Ramon Bayeu, Roy Lichtenstein, Serge Poliakoff, Pierre Bonnard,
Henri Matisse, Tom Wesselmann, Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol and scultures
of African art.
In
2006 the Foundation Caixa Galicia opened its branch in the city of A
Coruna with the aim of creating a space for culture that would become a
center of interest in the Herculean city. Over the course of the past
nearly two years we believe we have been fulfilling this aim by
offering top-notch shows that have been well received by the public.
Thus, since the exhibition dedicated to Diego Rivera, such important
figures in the world of international art as Manuel Millares and Man
Ray have passed through the Foundation Caixa Galicia.
On this
occasion, the show we are presenting and organizing in collaboration
with the Foundation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent can be described
as an innovative proposition in which the delicacy and elegance of haute couture
is combined with pieces from some of the most important figures in art
such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque and
Francisco de Goya. Yves Saint Laurent, the great creator who surprised
even Christian Dior, succeeded in bringing his tow artistic passions
into a dialogue of interpretation and influence from which dresses
emerged that transcend both utility and aesthetics in order to become
works of art. The Foundation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent and the
Foundation Caixa Galicia have made a selection of forty-six outifts to
represent this creative vein of the designer that may be seen now for
the first time in Spain. The catalogue accompanying this exhibition
includes texts by Pierre Bergé, Guillermo de Osma and Yves Saint
Laurent himself who analyzes the origins of his passion for art. In the
pages that follow, the designer's dresses are compared with the works
of art that inspired his high fashion, through explanatory texts and
photos of the dress and the work of art that inspired it. In january
2002, Yves Saint Laurent publicly announced his retirement from the
fashion world after forty years of profession and world recognition as
one of the great figures in 20th century fashion. Pierre Bergé and
Saint Laurent's interest in preserving the prototypes, sketches and
designed adornments throughout these years of intense work led to the
creation of the Foundation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent, which was
recognized as an entity of public utility in December 2002. Thus, for
our institution, it is most gratifying to carry out such an important
cultural project as this, made in close collaboration with a foundation
that centers its work on the conservation of artistic pieces.
