25 ans après son premier portrait d'Yves Saint Laurent, Irving Penn réalise un nouveau un chef d'oeuvre en noir et blanc. Caché derrière sa main, éclairé par ce maître de la lumière, il révèle plus qu'il ne cache de sa personnalité.
Alice Springs, de son vrai nom June Browne, est l'épouse d'Helmut Newton depuis 1948. Dès les années 70, elle devient photographe et témoigne des ses nombreux voyages et rencontres.
Inauguration de l'exposition Yves Saint Laurent 25 ans de Création au Metropolitan Museum de New York. Diana Vreeland organise la première exposition du Musée dédiée à un artiste vivant. Elle recevra plus d'un million de visiteurs.

Cette exposition représente une date très importante dans ma carrière. Après je reviendrai travailler dans mon petit atelier avec Mounia, et un peu de métrage de mousseline, pour commencer ma prochaine collection.

Exposition au Palais des Arts de Pékin, Chine. 600 000 visiteurs font des heures de queue pour visiter l'exposition dans un pays qui s'ouvre à l'époque à la culture occidentale. Les assistants de Diana Vreeland mettent en place le l'exposition retraçant la carrière d'Yves Saint Laurent, en collaboration un groupe d'étudiants de l'université de Beijing. En marge du succès, certains représentants chinois trouvent les vêtements "trop sexy" ou "difficiles à porter" pour la culture locale.
Exposition Yves Saint Laurent à la Maison des Peintres et des Ecrivains à Moscou (1986, 260 000 visiteurs), ainsi qu'au Musée de l'Hermitage à Leningrad (St-Petersbourg) (1987, 240 000 visiteurs) et au Art Gallery of New South Wales à Sydney (1987, 100 000 visiteurs). Une femme heureuse, c'est une femme avec un pull noir. Une Jupe noir. Un gros bijou faux. Et un homme à ses cotés.

Exposition Yves Saint Laurent au Musée des Arts de la Mode à Paris (132 000 visiteurs).
Défilé à la Fête de l'Humanité, organisée par le Parti Communiste Français. C'est l'époque de la Glasnost de Gorbatchev. 130 modèles défilent devant un parterre mélangeant les habitués de la Courneuve et ceux des salons parisiens.
Sous le Haut Patronage de Monsieur François Mitterrand, Président de la République, Yves Saint Laurent présente au musée Jacquemart-André, pour la première fois au public parisien, l'exposition des Costumes Russes, provenant de la collection du Musée de l'Ermitage. Cet événement est associé à "l'Étude Intégrale des Routes de la Soie ; Route du Dialogue" organisée par l'UNESCO.
Les 200 costumes présentés, parmi lesquels la garde-robe de Pierre Le Grand, certaines robes de Catherine II, sont réunis grâce au généreux soutien de la Société Yves Saint Laurent et de Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé.
En écho à l'exposition des Costumes Russes présentées à Paris, Yves Saint Laurent expose à Leningrad une partie de son oeuvre à laquelle il a toujours porté une grande passion : les costumes de théâtre.

Très tôt je suis allé à la rencontre du Japon et tout de suite j'ai été fasciné par ce pays ancien et moderne et j'ai, depuis, à diverses reprises subi son influence. D'autres avant moi connurent cette admiration: Monet, Van Gogh, et tous les artistes art-deco qui furent si importants dans notre époque.

The opening of the retrospective exhibit Yves Saint Laurent: 25 Years of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
Organized by Diana Vreeland, former fashion editor at Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, the exhibit was the first of its kind devoted to a living artist. It attracted over one million visitors.
Why Yves Saint Laurent ? Because he's a genius and he knows everything about women.

This exhibit shows that a couturier can also be, must be, a geometer, a vehement individual whose capacity for love has not dried up, an illusionist, a child, an astronomer, a simple person and a genius, a Sunday or night author, a copier, a tamer, a smooth operator, a seer. And that women do not feel like being one-dimensional, but want to saints and harridans, lionesses and huntresses, virgins and courtesans, men, paupers and countesses, clowns and spies.

The Metropolitan Museum's exhibit goes on tour and the first stop is Beijing's Palace of Fine Arts. 600,000 visitors flock to the show, standing in line for hours. China is opening up to Western culture. Diana Vreeland's assistants set up the exhibit with the help of students from Beijing University. The head of the Chinese Writers' Association tells a journalist that the clothes are 'too sexy' for Chinese women, while another official wonders how the clothes should be worn.

The Yves Saint Laurent exhibit moves on to Moscow's Painters' and Writers' House (1986, 260,000 visitors, Leningrad's Hermitage Museum (1987, 240,000 visitors) and Sydney's Art Gallery of New South Wales (1987, 100,000 visitors).

09/08/1988 Yves Saint Laurent at the Communist Party
A fashion show at the “Fête de l'Humanité” organized by the French Communist Party. It is the period of Gorbachev's Glasnost. 130 models walked past a throng of spectators made up of the party faithful and Paris' glitterati.
03/01/1989 Historical Russian garments 1700-1914
Under the patronage of President François Mitterrand, Yves Saint Laurent presents an exhibit of historical Russian garments from 1700-1914 at the Jacquemart-André museum. The exhibit, of which Yves Saint Laurent is the artistic director, gives Parisians their first glimpse at 200 outfits from the Hermitage Museum's superb costume collection, including Peter the Great's wardrobe and several of Catherine II's dresses.
The event is associated with “The Integral Study of the Silk Roads: Roads of Dialogue”, organized by UNESCO, and is supported by the YSL company and Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent personally.

The Yves Saint Laurent 1958-1990 restrospective, which includes theater sketches, opens at Tokyo's Sezon Museum of Art.
